Zagreb
Finishing our Croatian adventure on day 10 in the very cool city of Capital city of Zagreb. This place definitely needs some more time to explore…next time.
Day 10!
There is a lot of street art here. This sculpture makes me think of playing jacks when I was a kid.
Fantastic wine tasting and education at Vinoteka Borenstein. I definitely recommend a visit to see owners Ivan and Doris next time you’re here.
My new friend...not much of a conversationalist
The noon cannon in the Lotrščak tower goes off daily, harking back to the times when we needed to synchronize our watches and sundials.
A mural commemorating famous inventors from Croatia. Here is Penkala who invented the pencil. A little further along is Nikola Tesla.
There are lots of old gaslights around the parliament. There is a guy who actually walks around and hand-lights each one. This involves flicking a switch in each fixture with a long stick.
Zagreb was divided into two towns. The secular upper town, Gradec, is where I'm standing, overlooking Kaptol, the bishop's town, where there's a lot of Roman Catholic spire flexing. After a few centuries of civic bickering and brawling between the bishop's town and the King's town, they finally settled their issues and merged into one city in 1850.
St Mark’s Church, the 13th century parish church of old Gradec, is one of Zagreb's oldest buildings. It's not its age that is its biggest claim to fame. It's the new roof, laid in 1880, with thousands of tiles highlighting two coats of arms: the medieval kingdoms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left and the city of Zagreb's on the right.
